The pregnant man

March 28, 2008

I came across this piece of bizarre news the other night channel surfing in between commercials while watching American Dad.

“…an Oregon man is five months pregnant, according to a national magazine…”

Just when you thought you’d be able to come to terms to anything that happens in this topsy-turvy world of ours, here comes a man claiming he’s pregnant. Like everybody else, the first thoughts in my head were of the usual stereotype; freakin’ gay dude trying to have a baby, worst still who on earth is the mother, or father in this case, how the heck is going to give birth anyway, through the back passage? what the fuck??

I have to admit after reading more stuff about him, the story of Thomas Beatie and his wife Nancy was really a typical one of just another couple in love trying to start a family.

pregnant-man.jpg Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencingopposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.

This whole process, from trying to get pregnant to being pregnant, has been a challenge for us. The first doctor we approached was a reproductive endocrinologist. He was shocked by our situation and told me to shave my facial hair. After a $300 consultation, he reluctantly performed my initial checkups. He then required us to see the clinic’s psychologist to see if we were fit to bring a child into this world and consulted with the ethics board of his hospital. A few months and a couple thousand dollars later, he told us that he would no longer treat us, saying he and his staff felt uncomfortable working with “someone like me.”

I don’t dispute the bizarre nature of this piece of news, neither am I an advocate of transgenderism. But to tell somebody that you can’t bear a child when they can is, well, wrong. I’m going off at extremes here but if an abusive, wife-beating, alcoholic maniac of a man has never been denied rights to have a child, I don’t see where the justice is in robbing a transgender male and his legal wife of theirs especially if they’re capable of raising a child in a healthy environment.

I just hope they’ll pull through this fine.

And if you ask me, society should stick a pole up its ass and cram it.
